HI, I'M SIMON!
I started playing drums at age 13 as a self-taught hobbyist, my music career unexpectedly kicked off after a cruise ship drumming gig during my travel industry career. Seeking improvement post-contract, I learned from multiple teachers, eventually managing a top British drum store. Moving to L.A. in 2003, I gained diverse TV, theatre, and indie artist production experience. Throughout these adventures, teaching has remained my passion.
In 2016, I founded Drum Ambition to provide a structured, entertaining video curriculum for busy beginner drummers. My modern approach addresses the challenges of today's lifestyles. As a full-time teacher, I understand the hurdles of learning a musical instrument, emphasizing that, with proper guidance and a focus on enjoyment, anyone can learn to play the drums.
I USE 3 SECRETS TO SIMPLIFY THE ART OF DRUMMING FOR BEGINNERS
1
NO PLAYING PLATEUS
Technical skills are great, but beware of tunnel vision. My comprehensive approach helps build a solid foundation that allows you to finely tune the details over time, without getting lost in them.
2
MULTI-SENSORY THEORY
Rather than shying away from notation, I provide 1-on-1 demonstration with real-time notation on screen—so you can focus on playing along while gently learning theory for long-term success.
3
LOW COMMITMENT
With professional insights, troubleshooting solutions, and realistic goal-setting supporting your bite-sized lessons, Drum Ambition works to get you progressing and having fun in 20 minutes a day... really.
LEARNING THE DRUMS CAN BE LIFE CHANGING
I have helped drummers of all levels achieve their goals, but it is you, the beginner drummer, that I really enjoy teaching. Why? Because it is the beginning of a massively rewarding journey that can be life-changing, but only if you approach it in the right way. Selecting an appropriate learning medium that works for you, choosing suitable equipment, learning how to make the best use of your limited practice time, managing your expectations, and above all, keeping the whole adventure fun and inspiring are where so many beginner drummers fall down. I’m here to set you up for a successful, positive, and enjoyable learning experience.
I can honestly say that through music, I have met my closest friends, formed the most meaningful personal relationships, traveled the world, and had a lot of fun along the way. And the interesting thing is that music was never a chosen career path for me. One door seemed to open another, one recommendation would lead to new opportunities, new opportunities would lead to new locations, and I kept going to wherever this amazing journey would lead me next, until finally settling in San Diego. Your goals might be different. You may be starting to learn drums to fulfill a long-term goal, do something for yourself, or maybe it’s just a little stress relief after a long day at school or the office. Or, you may have just seen Green Day on the TV and thought to yourself; Wow, that drummer looks like he’s having a lot of fun. I want to try that!
Whatever your motivation, and whatever your goals with this drumming adventure, I hope that this experience might just change your life too. My goal is to give you the insight that I hope will set you up for a successful drumming journey.
